The University of Tasmania has identified the opportunity to co-locate in one city block many of the city’s performing arts teaching and presenting facilities to create a hub of arts and culture programming in the heart of Hobart called the Academy of Creative Industries and Performing Arts (ACIPA). Working with a team of architects (Liminal and WOHA), technical consultants (Arup), education specialists and key stakeholders, I ran a series of ‘deep dive’ workshops designed to articulate the vision, positioning and articulation of the detailed brief for the facility.
The project would see the consolidation of the Conservatorium, a practice facility for the Tasmanian Philharmonic and The Theatre Royal, as well as common front of house facilities and public space for students and the public in one site. A mix of teaching and professional spaces, ACIPA would become the heart of Hobart’s performing arts culture, bolstering Hobart’s transformation into a cultural capital since the opening of MONA.
